Social comparison theory refers to when a person will either compare themselves to someone who is better than them (upward comparison theory) or or someone who is worse off than them (downward comparison theory). In the attached clip from the movie "White Chicks" we see one of the characters in a fitting room comparing herself to a pig and consequently putting herself down in order to gain sympathy and to feel better about herself.
